Starting Sept. 14, the Cal State Fullerton Salsa Club will be hosting a Salsa Academy every Friday night, consisting of a 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. session for beginners and a 8:15 to 9:15 p.m. advanced class.

The classes will be taught by renowned salsa instructor Kazumi DeVries and all lessons are open to the public.

Classes will continue through Dec. 7 and are to be held in the Kinesiology building, room 203.

Cost to attend the dance series is $25 for members, $35 for non-members.

Admission prices for individual classes can be found on the club’s website.

Beginners are encouraged to attend the 7:15 p.m. class since there will be more experienced members available to help each individual. Those who would like to participate in the advanced classes are urged to come early so that their skills can be assessed for liability reasons.

Joshua Mendoza, the club’s president and founder, said participants should come to both the Wednesday and Friday meetings and explained the difference between the two sessions.

“Wednesday nights are more relaxed and act like a lab where you can practice and ask questions,” he said. “We hire a professional salsa instructor so everyone will know how to dance by the end of the semester.”

“The Friday Salsa Academy is more concentrated. It’s a different type of program; you learn a lot more techniques and skills. You also learn at a faster pace and in a shorter amount of time.”

Those who are interested in joining the club can pay a membership fee of $25 a semester which allows access to the club’s Wednesday classes and offers other benefits, including discounts to the Salsa Academy and to the club’s workshops.

“Just show up. We’re very flexible,” Mendoza said. “You will learn a lot of skills but we also have a lot of fun together.”
